TDF, LET’S TRY THIS AGAIN . . .

Every so often I get the urge to try and do these posts regularly and then equally I get the urge to quit blogging all together. Heck, most of the time I don’t really even ‘blog’ but rather I spend am inordinate amount of time trying keep my Cincy Beer Events calendar up-to-date.

This provides that outlet. While I struggle at times to write an official “beer story”, I always find this much easier and more fun.

Some of my favorite blogs are The Beer Blog (Rick Armon) and The Morning Line (Paul Daughtery) the latter of which I don’t get to read often enough. Both of them will have an influence on these posts from a layout perspective. In other words, I’m borrowing stealing a few of their ideas.

I plan to yuk it up about local beer news and events, some everyday lifestyle stuff and of course drop in some music. Anyways, here’s another attempt at FRESH Beer Report. Feedback is appreciated. It’s more fun that way.

BAD TOM, DIFFERENT DAY? . . .

11392784_10155613910005177_7522703656919592020_nYou’ve probably seen some of the reporting about the ownership changes at Bad Tom Smith Brewing Co. Unfortunately, things just didn’t work out as originally planned under the original ownership. It happens.

A less than ideal taproom experience as well as quality/consistency issues with their beers lead to what I’m assuming was a difficult road to hoe in a competitive and growing Cincinnati marketplace.

However, the calvary is coming. New majority owners, John Vojtush and Sheryl Gittins, have a vision to improve the taproom experience as well as the quality and consistency of their beers. Previous owner Sean Smith will still be very much involved and retains an ownership stake in the company.

They’ve brought on Jeff Graff, owner of Paradise Brewing as their new brewmaster and Thommy Long from LemonGrenade to provide branding/marketing guidance. You may have already noticed their increased activity on social media. Stay tuned for more changes to come. If you gave up on them previously give them another shot in the near future.

Let’s hear from you. Are you excited for the changes at Bad Tom? Weigh in.

PERISCOPE UP . . .

Recently, I’ve was made aware of Periscope — a live video streaming app for iOS and Android — which was recently purchased by Twitter for some serious cash.

Jan 04, 2013; Arlington, TX, USA; Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel (2) reacts after scoring a touchdown during the game against the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2013 Cotton Bowl at Cowboys Stadium. I wonder if the guys at Rhinegeist and MadTree walk around doing this all day? They should.

My favorite money reference of all time is still this gem. Straight Cash, Brady Duncan. Straight Cash.

Okay, back to periscope…CincyBrewcast did a live periscope interview at Listermann Brewing Co. the other night. I was curious about the application so I downloaded it and tuned in. I noticed a few friends pop in (I saw you Mr. Friendly Beer).

The application itself is pretty cool. However, it was pretty difficult to hear the show last night. The viewing was okay — if you enjoyed looking at the back of “Jason D Brewer” and Patrick Gilroy’s head the entire episode it was great. It was probably just a bad placement of the mic/camera or something. Normally the sound quality of their podcasts are great.

Nonetheless, it’s a new medium for social engagement. Perhaps a social media metric I’ll track one day. Or maybe not. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for all the breweries in Ohio is tiring enough each month.

When searching for local people to follow I came across accounts from 50W, Moerlein Lager House, Christian Moerlein, Brew Professor, Jesse Folk to name a few.

Don’t look for QCF to broadcast anytime soon. Nobody needs to see that.

So, did you tune in last night? What did you think? Do you think Periscope will catch on with the local craft beer breweries?

THE DAILY FRESH – MORNING OR EVENING EDITION? . . .

I’m sure this is of pressing importance to you. I know I’m struggling with it. I’m a night person. Always have been. I generally lay this fat head down between 1 – 3 am when my neck muscles finally say “Uncle”.

I’ve tried doing the morning thing but it never works out. I end up doing a chaotic dash each morning to get my youngest to school and get into the office before 9am. I really don’t see myself squeezing in a blog post each morning.

So, you’ll probably see this come out about 10pm each night. Perfect late night bathroom material while you’re dropping a deuce. It’s okay, we all do it. Don’t take my word for it. Let Morgan Freeman tell you. Disclaimer: No TDF posts will be authored on the porcelain throne.

WHAT I MISSED TODAY . . .

11046269_796559463798755_3211862206825594947_nDang it. I really wanted to go pick up some Nellie’s Keylime Caribbean Ale in cans today at Taft’s Ale House. I’ll take my chances that I can score some later this week perhaps at their Gustav tapping on Thursday.

I was a regular at Tuesdays on Tap at Whole Foods Market Mason but I’ve been absent from them for quite awhile. It was one of the few events my wife actually seemed to enjoy. Of course, not for the beer. It was yet another avenue to pick up groceries. As if 2/3 of my paycheck to Kroger and Target aren’t enough.

Speaking of spending, how in heck does a ladies haircut cost well over $100? I could get my haircut for 2 years at Great Clips for that. Damn near three years if I catch the $5.99 special. I’ll never understand that.

So, did you score Nellie’s today? Thumbs up? Did you like the can design/branding?

WHAT I’D LIKE TO DO TOMORROW . . .

Halfcut University If I could, which I won’t be able to, I’d like to check out fellow #CincyBeerBlogger BeerMumbo give his ‘A Closer Look at Sours’ class tomorrow night at HalfCut. If you have time tomorrow it should be a good time and you’ll get to sample some good sour/wild/tart beers. Listen. Taste. Learn. RSVP here

WHAT I DRANK TODAY . . .

Warrior_BottleI know ya’ll think I’m probably an alcoholic. Well, don’t be to excited. I’m not. I probably have just a few beers during the week and depending on the weekend (you know who you are) probably a few more. Honestly, I’ve openly said music over beer any day of the week.

That being said. I did have one beer today — Single Hop Imperial IPA with Warrior (Limited Release) from Flying Dog. It was just okay IMO. I was disappointed because I was pretty excited about it. I like trying those single hop variety beers to hopefully gain some knowledge/memory of the hop.

To be honest, I mainly bought it because I can’t pass up a Ralph Steadman label. So, at least I add another to my collection. Tomorrow, well maybe tonight, I’ll try the Maibock (Brewhouse Rarities). Fingers crossed.

Disclaimer: What I like and don’t like should in no way influence you. Try the beer for yourself. This goes for all beers I’ll talk about on here. Nonetheless, I’ll feel better if I told you I liked the Flying Dog Supertramp Tart Cherry Ale that I had prior to this one.

Finally, speaking of new beers… look for my New Beer Releases post to come back on Thursday.

BLESS ME FATHER FOR I HAVE SINNED . . .

Inside_Amy_SchumerOkay, when I’m not writing about beer, drinking a beer, attending a beer event, or listening to music — I watch a little tele. Geez, I really neglect my family. Actually, I usually watch this stuff once everyone is sleeping. And for good reason.

Lately, I’ve started watching Inside Amy Schumer on Comedy Central. It’s funny but so bad. I have to watch PBS Newshour to help wash off that stank.

Who’s else is watching and enjoying this? I know I’m not alone.

BEER NEWS & STUFF . . .

— Caitlyn Koening of Soapbox Cincinnati reports on Algis Aukstuolis, a local homebrewer that turned to brewing kombucha and started Skinny Pig Kombucha. “I think Cincinnati deserves its own kombucha,” Aukstuolis says. “There are a number of styles coming from California, but Cincinnati has its own specific taste. I want to cater to that taste as well as help encourage healthy drinking lifestyles.” Aukstulois has plans to move in the same building as Urban Artifact. To read the full story, click here.

— Jesse Folk of WCPO.com reports on Taft’s Ale House plans to unveils cans, sours and a new homebrewer beer series. “I tend to try and work with homebrewers because that’s where I came from and I want those guys to know that I’m still around, I’m still part of the group and I wouldn’t be here without them,” Moreland said. To read the full story, click here.

— Evan Millward of WCPO.com reports on Drinkos, a delivery service in the Cincinnati and Dayton market where you order beer, wine, low-proof liquor and more through a smartphone app or by ordering online. To read the full story, click here.

MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC . . .

I’m incredibly fortunate this week in the music department. I’ll be going to the Jason Isbell / Dwight Yoakam show on Thursday night followed by 3 days of Bunbury Music Festival.

I obtained a media pass again this year (thank you PromoWest!) so I’m excited to be able to shoot some pics of The Black Keys, The Avett Brothers and Snoop and so many more from the pit again. It should be a great time. All that is left is single day tickets so get them while you can.

Here’s some old school SNOOP-D-O-DOUBLE-G from his debut album Doggstyle. Gin and Juice, released in January 1994.

Who are you looking forward to seeing this weekend at Bunbury?

That’s all for tonight.
